We live in the day and age of the "Do it yourselfer". Nowadays, most people go to the internet to search DIY info. You can find hudreds of website having to do with ways to cut corners, save money, and get the project done. Also entire TV channels are devoted to the "Weekend Warrior" and "Wantabe home flipper". Practically most home upgrades and repairs have been reduced to a simple trip to Lowes or Home Depot. To be honest with you, some home repairs and upgrades are that easy, BUT NOT EPOXY COATINGS AND APPLICATIONS!!!
WHY?
For starters:
  • The "Do-it-yourself" kits sold at stores are all water based. They contain low amounts of solids with means how much resin is included in the mix. The highest quality epoxy is solvent based and you have to classify it as a Hazardous material, which big box retail stores WILL NOT SELL. Kind of like the difference between "over the counter medicine and presciption". You cant buy the materials Ultimate Mancaves uses in the store.
  • Because it has a low solids count and is waterbased, its mostly paint! Paint will not adhere to concrete and certainly wont with stand a 4000-pound vehicle or tire tempetures of 200 degrees plus. Look below.
  • The prep solution in the DIY kits is very weak and WILL NOT PREP YOUR CONCRETE! If grinding is not needed, we use a phosphoric acid with a cleaning solution that takes off a layer of concrete to open the pores and allow the epoxy to adhere.
  • The DIY kits DO NOT INCLUDE a clear coat to protect the epoxy and chips.
  • If you are broadcasting a chip layer (which we do in 100% of our projects) YOU HAVE ONE CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT. If you do not broadcast evenly, you CANNOT go back over it. REMEMBER, EPOXY IS GLUE and not painting a wall.
